As he likes it

January 27, 2011

TONY
“There ain’t nothing better than when it gets warm again after it’s been really, really cold. You know it was -30 with that wind the other night. That’s not for me, that’s for sure, not anymore anyway.”

Death of a salesman

January 26, 2011

TONY
“Well that’s another of us gone. Did you know that Marty’s dead?  He just died over the weekend.”

PHILIP
“Who’s Marty?”

TONY
“You know the short homeless guy who was selling the newspapers in front of Sobey’s just down Ronces?  Well he died.”

PHILIP
“Sure, I remember him but I didn’t know his name was Marty. He seemed a nice guy to me.”

TONY
“He was saying how he was feeling terrible and went to the hospital on Saturday and he had a heart attack and he died Sunday. You know he was turning 50 next week, eh?”

PHILIP
“You mean 60? He couldn’t have been just 49. He looked way too old for being 49.”

TONY
“Well let me tell you, he put a lot of things into himself in his life that shouldn’t have been put in there — and he liked a drink too so you know what I mean.”

Time for a change

January 22, 2011

PHILIP
“How’s things?”

TONY
“Someone asked me what I would do if I could change my life yesterday.”

PHILIP
“What did you say?”

TONY
“I thought you would ask me that. Anyway, I told them I needed time to think about it. When it’s one of those big questions like that, you got to give it some time.”

PHILIP
“Sounds like a wise approach to me.”

Romeo and Juliet

January 20, 2011

TONY
“I saw her again the other day. You know the one, blond one I told you about that I would just fall in love with in a heartbeat, you know the one who’s doing the acting and stuff.”

PHILIP
“And then …”

TONY
“Well she touched me on the shoulder, right there, and I just about melted right there, if you know what I mean. ”

PHILIP
“And then what?

TONY
“Well, you know, she’s the kind I’d want to change up my whole life for. Well, you know I’m too old anyway.”

PHILIP
“You’re never too old, you know.”

TONY
“That’s true, I gotta say, everything is possible. “

The promise

January 17, 2011

TONY
“Can you print out the blog for me?”

PHILIP
“Sure. I’ll do it today.”

TONY
“That’s what you said to me last time.”

PHILIP
“Yeah, I know.”

Just sorrow

January 14, 2011

PHILIP
“Did you hear about the homeless guy who killed the cop with a snow plow?”

TONY
“Well it just shows you that homeless folks can be psycho as anyone else is. I just feel sorry for that cop’s family is all I can say.”

Right from the source

January 12, 2011

PHILIP
“Did you see what the Bruins did to Ottawa last night?”

TONY
“Yeah but it was nothing like what happened to the Seahawks the other day.”

PHILIP
“How do you keep up with this stuff?”

TONY
“Like they say, I’ve got my sources.”

Taking his chances

January 9, 2011

PHILIP
“I wanted to tell you that I posted the video about that homeless guy with the radio announcer voice.”

TONY
“Well he sure deserved to get an another chance with a voice like that one. Some people deserve a second chance, if you know what I mean.”

Only a dream

January 4, 2011

TONY
“I dreamed that I found a wallet last night.”

PHILIP
“So did you return it?”

TONY
“What do you think?  The girl who lost it was really nice and she gave me a $1,000 dollars but, you know, I didn’t even take it from her. But I don’t think I could really say “no” in real life.”

PHILIP
“That’s maybe being a bit too proud, maybe.”

TONY
“Don’t I know it.”

Retirement planning

January 3, 2011

PHILIP
“Ever thought about retiring?”

TONY
“Are you kidding? All the time.”

Meeting of the minds

January 1, 2011

TONY
“Hey, happy new year, Phil.”

PHILIP
“Happy new year, Mr. Clemens. I think it’s going to be a good one.”

TONY
“Me too.”

Father knew best

December 29, 2010

PHILIP
“I’ve never asked you about your dad; what did he do for a living?”

TONY
“Oh he was a highway mechanic, fixing rigs when they broke down mostly.”

PHILIP
“That’s got to be one lonely job.”

TONY
“And lonely.”

PHILIP
“Dangerous, I bet.”

TONY
“Hot in the summer.”

PHILIP
“Weren’t you trained as a car mechanic?”

TONY
“Yeah, but I was never as good as my dad.”

Here I stand — I can do no other

December 27, 2010

PHILIP
“Would you call yourself stubborn?”

TONY
“Some people would say that and I’m not disagreeing with them. You got to be stubborn to stay in this business, that’s no joke.”

PHILIP
“So what would happen if you weren’t stubborn then?”

TONY
“I guess I would be even more homeless or something.”

They call him the sneak

December 21, 2010

TONY
“I’ll just say that Santa Claus just kind of snuck up on everybody this year. I wasn’t expecting it, that’s for sure.”

Up where he belongs

December 16, 2010

PHILIP
“Hey, where did you sleep last night? I think they said it was going down to -20C with the windchill.”

TONY
“I got lucky. My friend let me use a bed in their house so it was OK. It even wasn’t in the basement, so it was pretty toasty too.”
