Tony has cancer

March 26, 2010

Hi All,
Tony has been coughing up blood for more than a month, though we haven’t spoken of it here. After coughing incessantly for several hours yesterday, he went to Toronto Western Hospital and they confirmed it. He was told that he had 18 months to live without surgery, which is somewhat iffy at this stage of the cancer. So he hasn’t made a decision.

After telling me the news, he lit up a cigarette and said: “Let me put it this way — a cigarette can’t hurt me now.”

More when I know more.

The end of a dry, white season

TONY
“They say that April showers bring May flowers, but we aren’t even in April yet and it’s already comin’ down.”

Chill factor

March 22, 2010

TONY
“Boy, you could really tell that my body’s old. Last night, I was up near the drugstore, you know, up at Howard Park and Ronces and I was shivering my you-know-what off with all my sweaters and my coat, and there comes this kid on his bike, he doesn’t even have a shirt on. Makes me cold just thinking about it.”

TONY
“You see my new coat here. I had to get rid of that old one; I just couldn’t get out that smell anymore.”

On the bus

March 20, 2010

PHILIP
“Hey, what are you doing here?”

TONY
“You know, I take the bus too sometimes.”

PHILIP
“So when you ask people for a bus token, you actually use them?  I figured you sold the tickets to get money …”

TONY
“Well how am I supposed to get around if I don’t use the bus? I don’t exactly have a car, if you know what I mean.”

PHILIP
“I gotta admit, you’ve got a point there.”

Keeping the balance

TONY
My balance has gone out again. I’m banging into things. Look at this.

When it’s free

TONY
“I got myself a new t-shirt. I’ll show you. Here you go.”

PHILIP
“It’s lovely.”

TONY
“Especially when it’s free, if you know what I mean.”

Dealing with loss and pain

March 2, 2010

TONY
“So this guy came by, I’ve seen him sometimes, and he tells me he just lost a $1,000 betting on the US team in the finals the other day.  He’ll says he’ll be paying it off ’til May. Now that’s gotta hurt.”
