Actually, until quite recently, All Saints’ Day, November 1st, was considered by the Catholic Church to be a Holy Day of Obligation. All Souls Day, November 2nd is still a day in which people are encouraged to attend mass to pray for those whose merits are deemed to be less than what would constitute ‘sainthood’. There are also indulgences and forgiveness that can be earned to commemorate those who have passed away.
