Harper’s Magazine (Nov. 2007, http://www.harpers.org/archive/2007/11/hbc-90001590) in the USA ran an interesting piece invoking Mr. Fawkes’s name in connection with counterterrorism policy after September 11. The basic idea was that torture doesn’t usually work as intended, besides that it might be inhumane. The slow, relatively painless torture, by psychology and chill air, of homeless blokes apparently does not count.
